Remembering What Matters

Last night, the NFL world literally stopped when Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field.

What mattered in that moment? Damar Hamlin’s life. Medical assistance. His family. And prayer.

As an NFL fan and fantasy football fan, the game is never what matters most. The business of football? Nope. The outcome of the game? Nope. The rankings? Nope. A fantasy football championship? Nope.

There are moments in life that create great clarity and even greater urgency about what truly matters. Moments that, more than not, we tend to suppress.

As a pastor, I have the privilege of walking through these moments with people. Both high moments and low moments that show us what matters.

Don’t rush through this feeling. Embrace the clarity and the urgency. Evaluate your priorities. Seek God. Make a change.

If I can help in some way, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

One more thing to my pastor friends. You may often struggle with whether you make a difference. Even with whether the work you do still matters to people in this world. It does because it’s eternal in nature. Our work is a ministry of presence and servanthood. Keep showing up. Lean in as people lean in. Life matters. Eternity matters. Grace matters. Prayer matters. That’s what we do.
